Project combined the construction of major new extensions to existing museum complex to form new access and interpretation centre and extensive refurbishment of the existing Roman Army Museum and Chesterholm Museum together with extensive external upgrading.

All the works were of extremely high quality reflecting the World Heritage status of the site and involved a variety of traditional techniques and craft skills including stonemasonry.

The works were divided into seven phases to enable maximum ongoing operations throughout construction period and required very close and effective ongoing collaboration with the client and project team to achieve this.

The refurbishment works required significant co-operation and integration with the client appointed Display and Fit out Contractors and Design Team and this was effectively achieved through close ongoing involvement in regular programming and co-ordination meetings.

The new build element achieved a “very good” BREEAM rating and the works ensured greatly improved accessibility to the museums and exhibition spaces.
