The project comprised the creation of a new award winning national Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and Visitors Centre and incorporated both extensive new build and refurbishment of and extensions to existing historic and listed buildings.

The new build element comprised the construction of an exceptionally high quality landmark new museum providing around 500m2 of exhibition space together with reception, café / catering and office space and extensive external works.

The refurbishment element comprised the comprehensive refurbishment and upgrading and restoration of both the listed Burns Cottage (stone walls and thatched roof)  and the 1906 museum building which has been converted into an Education Facility providing a range of function rooms and library.

External works included the construction of a new feature timber footbridge connecting the museum with the Burns Walk and Education Pavilion.

The project required very careful planning and execution and very close ongoing collaboration with the National Trust for Scotland and project Design Team to achieve a multi phased handover and ensure minimum disruption to the ongoing operation of the complex during the construction phase.

The new museum and visitors centre building achieved a “Very Good” BREEAM Rating and incorporates a range of sustainable features and components including:- Sustainably sourced “green” Dougals Fir structural frame with extensive timber cladding and glazing; Sedum Roof; Recycled Paper insulation within external walls providing effective thermal insulation and enhancing hydroscopic efficiency; Ground source heat pump; Innovative internal climate control system
